Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The vision of Data Movement is to build innovative solutions for real-time ingestion of terabytes of data and billions of events into our data warehouse for analysis and business-specific processing. Our team operates some of Stripe's highest volume data pipelines, processing over 1 GB/second for critical use cases such as Money Movement, Payment, Fraud Detection, Machine Learning, Reporting, and externally facing products like Radar and Sigma.

The team owns the managed ingestion platform that operates on a wide variety of technologies including Kafka, Change Data Capture, Event Bus, Flink, Spark, Airflow, Hive MetaStore, Trino, Pinot, S3 and Iceberg. On the cusp of innovation, we're pushing the boundaries of open-source Iceberg and Spark for real-time ingestion.

What you’ll do

We're looking for a manager to drive the technical vision of the Data Movement platform and lead a team in solving high-impact, cutting-edge distributed system problems. The ideal candidate will be someone that has built ingestion systems, is empathetic, excels at building strong relationships, and collaborates effectively with other Stripe teams to understand their use cases and unlock new capabilities. You will:

  • Deliver cutting-edge infrastructure and product platforms that scale to users' needs, focusing on reliability and efficiency.
  • Lead and manage a team of ambitious, talented engineers, providing mentorship, guidance, and support to ensure their success.
  • Drive the execution of a key initiative for the Data Platform at Stripe, overseeing the entire development lifecycle from planning to delivery while maintaining high standards of quality and timely completion.
  • Collaborate with the product manager and key leaders across the company to create a shared roadmap and drive adoption of real-time datasets, creating significant impact by mitigating fraud-related losses and providing fresher data for Money Movement and Reporting.
  • Understand user needs and pain points to prioritize engineering work and deliver high-quality solutions that meet user needs.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership in architecture/design, vision/direction/requirements setting, and incident response processes for your reports.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment, promoting innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Partner with our recruiting team to attract and hire top talent, and define the overall hiring strategies for your team.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • 3+ years of experience managing teams that shipped and operated data pipelines and critical distributed system infrastructure.
  • Proven success in recruiting and building great teams.
  • Extreme customer focus, with a commitment to partnering with Product Managers, leaders, and other Stripe engineers to understand their use cases.
  • Effective cross-functional collaboration, with the ability to think rigorously, communicate clearly, and make or coordinate difficult decisions and trade-offs.
  • Thrives with high autonomy and responsibility in an ambiguous environment.
  • Technical acumen to drive clarity with staff engineers on architecture and strategic technical decisions.
  • Ability to foster a healthy, inclusive, challenging, and supportive work environment.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience managing high-velocity teams that shipped products to data users and operated large-scale, high-availability data transformation pipelines.
  • Expertise in Iceberg, Kafka, Change Data Capture, Flink, Spark, Airflow, Hive Metastore, Trino, and influencing open-source contributions is a plus.
  • Genuine enjoyment of innovation and a deep interest in understanding how things work, with the ability to question and direct architectural decisions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for various audiences, including leadership, users, and company-wide.

This role is available either in an office or a remote location (typically, 35+ miles or 56+ km from a Stripe office).

Office-assigned Stripes spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users. This hits a balance between bringing people together for in-person collaboration and learning from each other, while supporting flexibility about how to do this in a way that makes sense for individuals and their teams.

A remote location, in most cases, is defined as being 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of our offices. While you would be welcome to come into the office for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events, our expectation is you would regularly work from home rather than a Stripe office. Stripe does not cover the cost of relocating to a remote location. We encourage you to apply for roles that match the location where you currently or plan to live.

The annual US base salary range for this role is $203,900 - $305,900. For sales roles, the range provided is the role’s On Target Earnings ("OTE") range, meaning that the range includes both the sales commissions/sales bonuses target and annual base salary for the role. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at Stripe and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and location. Applicants interested in this role and who are not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.

Additional benefits for this role may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses; 401(k) plan; medical, dental, and vision benefits; and wellness stipends.
